How to Stop Google from Spying on You even if Location Tracking is Off?

Computer-science researchers at Princeton recently discovered that Google services on iPhone and Android devices have been storing your location details even when you have turned off the feature in privacy settings.

Location data is always needed for specific Google services such as Maps for providing navigation purposes. However, leaving the setting on for a prolonged time period will lead to Google Maps displaying a timeline that presents information about a person’s daily movements. These findings establish the fact that “Google spying on you” has been confirmed by the researchers, according to an AP report.

Android Device Manager

Google and "Location History"

Google allows you to pause a setting known as Location History as this will prevent the company from remembering your whereabouts. The support page notes, "You can turn off Location History at any time. With Location History off, the places you go are no longer stored." However, this is not true according to the AP report. The report further states that Google apps automatically store time-stamped location data without confirming even when the feature is turned off.

Almost two billion users of iPhones and Android devices using Google Maps or Search are currently experiencing this location tracking issue. Your location generally gets pinpointed by the automatic daily weather updates on your Android smartphone. This issue is not a privacy issue but it is considered to be a clear violation of a user's preferences.

"There are a number of different ways that Google may use location to improve people's experience, including: Location History, Web and App Activity, and through device-level Location Services," a Google spokesperson stated in a statement to the AP. However, Google is also aware of the fact that users can pause location tracking by turning off the "Web & App Activity" which also stores other data from Google apps and websites to the individual's Google account. When this feature is paused it will prevent activities on any device from getting saved to the Google account. Google users will be able to view the stored location markers on a page in their Google account at myactivity.google.com. However, this information could be present under many different headers, many of which may not be related to location.

For instance, Android Device Manager is Google’s easy-to-use and official tool capable of tracking your Android phone or tablet. You need not install an app to be able to track your devices. Your device will just have to be connected to your Google account, turned on and then connected to the internet. While being logged into your Google Account, you will have to visit the Device Manager for Android. After the site gets loaded, it will automatically try to track down your phone. In this similar manner, this very same Android Device Manager will thus keep a track of all your location details. Hence, coming up with a solution for "Google spying on you" is still an on-going research process, however, there are few steps you can perform to prevent Google from tracking you.

How to Stop Google from Tracking You

On Android:

  • Click on Security and location under the main settings icon.
  • Scroll down to Privacy heading and tap Location.
  • You can toggle it off for the whole device.
  • Turn off access to various apps using App-level permissions. Unlike the iPhone, there is no setting for While Using. It is not possible to turn off Google Play services, which supplies your location to several other apps if that service is left on.
  • Sign in as a guest on your Android device.
  • Be alert of which services you sign in on, like Chrome. It is also possible to change search engines even in Chrome.

On iOS:

  • If you’re using Google Maps, modify your location setting to While Using the App. This will help prevent the app from accessing your location when it is not active.
  • Go to Settings > Privacy > Location Services and then select Google Maps to make the change.

For any device:

  • Go to myactivity.google.com.
  • Go to Activity Controls on the upper left drop-down menu.
  • Both Location History and Web & App Activity should be turned off. This should prevent accurate location markers from being stored to your Google account.
  • You will get a warning from Google that some of its services will not work with these settings turned off.
  • Neither a digital concierge, the Google Home smart speaker, nor the Google Assistant will be particularly useful.
