Why I Don’t Allow Remote Access to My Computer

Remote access tools are touted as the cookie cutter software for MSPs. As an MSP myself, I am extremely careful about what kind of programs I work with. Despite a remote access software’s perks, there are just some things people need to be aware about these platforms.

Do you know that cybercriminals are sharing remote access rights on the Dark Web by the hundreds? Yes, that’s right. A remote access software can allow the bad guys unfettered access to your system if you’re not careful. This is why I don’t just allow remote access to my computer.

Here’s my laundry list of why I don’t allow remote access to my computer and why you should also be careful especially if you’re accessing from your business network.

1. Uncontrolled Browsing

   You’re not exactly aware where people in your home are browsing to in the Internet. For all you know, someone in your home might be browsing pornography or downloading from torrent sites. These habits will compromise your system as hackers might be planting viruses in these sites. It’s better you are made aware of this disadvantage if you plan on accessing computers in your home from work.

2. Weak Cybersecurity Protection

   Everyone knows enterprise software is a notch higher than the software found at home. Many users use free antivirus and antimalware programs which do not have the full cybersecurity protection potential. If you are accessing a home computer, you might be accessing a Trojan infested system but its security programs failed to detect them.

3. Unsupported Systems

   Computers can be a load on the wallet, that is why people maximize their use and don’t replace them until they break down. This means there are a lot of computers out there with unsupported operating systems like Windows XP. The bad thing about unsupported software is they are no longer patched and their security holes are no longer covered.

4. Weak Passwords

   Some people use “Password” as their password and think it’s clever. But it’s not. People rely on weak passwords because it is hard to memorize the recommended strong password formats. People not using strong passwords is just inviting a cybercriminal from bruting this protection in your computer.

5. Users Can Be Security Vulnerabilities

   People who aren’t trained in cybersecurity and unaware of social engineering will fall prey to scammers. When they do, the system gets infected and suddenly it’s a security risk to do remote access to this node. Unless people at the other end are professionally trained, it will be very hard to avoid a security problem.

6. Bad Password Storage

   People store passwords in their browsers to enable quick log-ins. This is great for convenience but bad for cybersecurity. If hackers gain access to that computer and gets their hands on their passwords, your remote access to that computer becomes a flashpoint for a potential breach on your network.

7. Uncleared Access Privileges

   Businesses forget to clear the access rights of their old employees. When this happens, the employee can just easily give away his access rights to some cybercriminal. What will happen to your own network if you accessed this compromised network?

   So be like me and be very wary of how you allow remote access to your system. It’s dangerous to allow this kind of access to your system. A cybercriminal can do many things with your personal information or they can plant malware in your computer. They can steal your financial information as well. When they get to your bank information, they can steal money from your bank. Be very careful about remote access control and authorize only those from firms you trust.
