RMM Acronym

Why Do We Say "RMM" Instead of Remote Management and Monitoring?

ITarian is an open source remote monitoring and management (rmm) program designed for MSP professionals. It makes their jobs easier and comes with an excellent set of modules and helpful add-on modules are available. However, many times you'll see the rmm acronym (instead of "remote monitoring and management") when referring to this platform. We all know it's simpler and quicker to use an abbreviation of a term instead of the actual term, but why is that? Let's look a little closer at the world of acronyms to discover more about them.

What Does This Blog Post Have to Do with MSP Remote Management?

Although it may be interesting to learn about brevity, is it relative to ITarian software and MSP businesses? The answer is a definite yes! Why? Because the reason behind the entire open source software project (which is now called ITarian) was to take something long and drawn out and bring it under the command of one program. So in essence, our software program is an rmm acronym. Now, let's discover more about why we (as human beings) like to condense and abbreviate things.

Saving Time

Most of us today have more things to do in one day than we can possibly finish. This is the reason we must schedule and prioritize our time. For instance, you may have 10 things on your "to do" list today, but chances are you'll be happy if you get the top 3 or 4 accomplished. Plus, things which can save time allow us to get more things done, and perhaps you can get 6 or 7 of those things done. Using the term RMM instead of what it really means, is not going to save you an enormous amount of time, but if you use enough acronyms during the day, time savings can add up.

Give Your Brain a Break

Think about this, when you use something like an rmm acronym, your brain gets a little rest break. It doesn't have to go into its memory bank and retrieve a long term. Instead, it has this simple abbreviation ready and you don't have to think quite as hard, especially if you use acronyms like RMM, NATO, NCAA, NFL, UFC, PSA, USB, USA, HDMI and these are only a few terms which are commonly thrown around each day. So the next time you need a quick "think break, throw in as many shortened terms as you can. Your brain will thank you.

Mobile Devices

How many times have you texted someone and hit the wrong key by mistake? If you use a stylus it helps but even then, typing out a text message can be real ordeal at times. Thankfully, there are a lot of terms (like the rmm acronym we use constantly), which helps make texting easier. Let's look at a typical text message with and without those helpful little acronyms, to demonstrate our point.

"For your eyes only! As far as I can remember, the frequently asked questions list you requested is not available. However, I will check with the tech to see if a list is in the archives, and get back to you by the end of the business day. I know you are busy so there is no need to respond. Thank you very much, John."

Now let's take the same text and simplify it with abbreviations:

"FYEO. AFAIR the FAQ is NA. But will check with the tech 2 C if it's in the archives, and contact you by EOBD. TYVM John."

Like it or not, the mobile device phenomenon is here to stay and it is growing by the day. So, it makes sense to use the rmm acronym and many others as we can, to get through our busy days. This can simplify communications in a PSA RMM operation or any other business.

Impress Your Friends and Business Associates

Although we may not admit it, most of us like to impress and when you use abbreviate terms (especially tech terms) you appear to be informed and know what you are talking about (whether this is actually the case or not). So, the next time you talk about RMM PSA, tell them ITarian also has add-on module features like AEP (advanced endpoint protection) and WBPR (watch breach prevention and reporting). They may just be impressed enough to visit https://www.itarian.com/ to see what these terms mean. Of course, it's much easier to simply call us at (973) 859 4000 ext 3025 about a live demonstration.
